You Are What You Eat - Dialysis Tips

My dialysis center has a dietician on staff a couple days a week. When I first started dialysis, she sat with me and asked me a ton of questions about my diet, and I hate to say I was embarrassed by some of my answers.  I love food.  I spend much of my TV time watching cooking shows.  I also love eating out.

After my “assessment” she says to me, “You need to change your eating habits.”  I was thinking “yeah right.”  I needed motivation to make any changes.  I really needed to be scared straight.

Then I watched a show on Netflix series called You Are What You Eat, A Twin Experiment. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt30386970/   Oh my!  That was certainly eye opening, and enough to make you think about what you eat.

The dietician provided a list of foods that I shouldn’t eat.  So, I took the list, said goodbye to some of my favorites (like potatoes, French Fries, avocados, and cheese) and stopped eating them.  She also gave me a list of items I could eat.  I found my favorites and cashed in on being able to eat more of them.

My recommendation to help make the leap to eating better is to eat more of what is good for you that you like, and you won’t be hungry for what you can’t have. And u

se your dietician! They are there for you, so use them.  Make them do your research.  They can help find alternatives to your favorites.  They can also confirm that Chick-fil-A is still ok, depending on what you get.
