Have you ever had cramps in your legs in the middle of the night?  The kind that shoots you out of bed with intense pain.  Well, welcome to dialysis.

Many of the patients at the dialysis center experience cramping.  You can hear people moan in agony or they are constantly moving to try to loosen the cramp.

I wasn’t expecting the cramping – no one warned me.  Many times, it happens when they pull too much fluid off.  For me, the cramps in my legs or feet usually start when I only have a few more minutes on the machine.

If the cramps get too intense, tell the nurse or tech.  They will generally turn off pulling fluid but keep cleaning your blood.  Second remedy is to pull back on your toes to stretch the feet and legs. It takes a minute for the cramps to stop. Not a fun feeling.
