When you have a fistula, you can no longer have your blood pressure checked on that arm. You also can’t have blood drawn from it or have an IV. I started to worry about being unconscious and how someone would know not to use that arm.
I asked at the hospital what I could use to help identifiy the restriction. They gave me several bands I could use, almost like hospital bands used for allergies. They were pink and said “restricted extremity.” They were not attractive and didn’t last very long.
I found a very inexpensive, and stylish medical bracelet that reads “No BP/IV/Needles this arm.” It also has a medical symbol charm attached which should help emergency personnel see it quickly. It comes in different colors and I’ve been wearing mine for several months and it has held up great! (see below)
I recommend getting something you can put on your arm to notify emergency personnel of your restriction, especially if you can’t convey it verbally.
