Amid all the chaos, I am still working full time. I've been at my job for over 25 years, and I am a workaholic. Because of that, I did postpone some appointments and surgeries, which didn't help my situation. I work because I love what I do, but also for the insurance. Without insurance, I don't know how anyone could afford all these tests, surgeries, and treatments.
I've been on dialysis for 4 months. Each week the dialysis center bills the insurance between $50,000 to $75,000 dollars. I've had 2 surgeries (catheter and fistula) as well as several blood transfusions. Today, I see the total amount billed to the insurance is $965,049.79.....for 4 months!....and not all the bills have come in yet. So, it's important to have some kind of coverage before embarking on this journey. And keeping up with the claims is a nightmare! It's another full-time job to review the claims and pay what the insurance doesn't cover.
Many people at the dialysis center are on Medicare or have insurance through the marketplace. It sounds like marketplace insurance is tricky! Not all plans cover critical illnesses such as chronic kidney disease, or a kidney transplant, so make sure to ask if it's covered. A $50 a month plan may not cover critical illness, and the add-ons can be expensive.
